EXCLUSIVE:-It Is Quite Hard For People Like Us To Find Who Will Love Us For Who We Are - Denrele Edun
Denrele (Werede) |
Tell us something we don't know about Denrele Edun.
My life is an open book. Everybody practically knows everything about me. What is it you want to hear that you have not heard before, you have not read before, you have not seen somewhere, or somebody hasn’t told you before, or someone has not fabricated about me before., someone has not exaggerated before to the point of hyperbolism. Ok, well i think on the home front, my siblings can attest to the fact that, i am somewhat some sort of disciplinarian. I no dey tolerate nonsense. I would like to say that, the fear of denrele, in the Edun household, is the beginning of wisdom. So i think that is what people don’t basically know about me. But now that i have said it, everyone now knows. I am not a wicked person though.
What is your definition of a skilled compere?
Wow. Thats a very good question. A skilled compere, i am not in that designation to define it, or i would not say i have the where with all to put a classy description to it, but i would just say all in all. A skilled compere, is someone who never forgets a name, and a face, and has to be very knowledgeable of his/her job description, and how you are going to carry out your duties. I will explain why. When people call me for compere jobs, i ask them the target audience, crowd, what the event is all about, and who would be attending the event. You have to put all these into account so you can structure what to say on stage. Then you also have to do your research nobody is too brilliant to know everything.
What are the things that are likely to cause stage fright in you when you are going on stage to anchor an event?
There are two levels of stage fright. First you might be intimidated by the crowd. like how i would be able to convince these number of people, especially when you are doing one of those Guinness or Smirnoff ice parties, where everybody is there to party, and have fun. Nobody wants you to come on stage and start talking. why the hell would you want to come on stage and start talking? when we know the reason why people are there is to dance and have fun. Another thing that causes stage fright is when you are unprepared for a gig, when you are called on. In the last minute and you are not prepared for the event. That is likely to disorganize you, and cause serious stage fright. Another thing that causes stage fright is when you are not knowledgeable about the event. In such situation, you just have to use your intelligence to do some last minute madness to carry the crowd along.
What are the three things to put into consideration before hitting the red carpet ?
Even if your mama die a day before nobody wan know. Even if that morning you catch your girlfriend/boyfriend in bed with another man, nobody wan know o. Even if you have a bit of an accident or your car breaks down, nobody cares. No excuses. The first and only rule of the game of production is, "The show must go on" . Secondly, the director is always right. So, to step on the red carpet you must always be in the right state of mind, knockoff mood swings. You are going on the red carpet to make people smile, laugh and to compliment them so, your countenance should always be welcoming. If not you would be greatly avoided when next seen on the red carpet.
Have you ever had any regrets wearing a particular outfit?
Never! I don’t think i ever have. Because if i had, i wouldn’t have worn what i wore to the AMVCA. I don’t think i have ever had any so far. Even while growing up, I never did. Except for the time when i had just two shirts ,three jeans, and one pair of shoe. I use to wear that show everyday, so it developed a smell. I had to always dry it under the sun in order for me to be able to wear it the next day.
Tell us about your most embarrassing moment.
It has to be one of my hustling periods. This is so funny. Linda ikeji used to run a huge modelling agency called black dove, and she used to have this event called style night, which I was one of the dancers for the style night event. One particular day, we were supposed to do some backup dancing, choreography routine for her sister, laura ikeji. So i stepped on stage with kaffi, suzzy, and one other girl called Yemeni. After doing my first routine i decided to top it up with a split, as soon as i did the split my jean ripped off from my crouch area, to my butt area. Thank God i was wearing boxers that day, which I almost didn't wear that day because, i washed it the previos night and it was still wet. I was, thankful to God that I wore that boxer. That was sometime in 2001/2002 i was so worried, but then i pulled it off and continued dancing.
What is your greatest fear?
In one sentence my greatest fear, is the fear of running out of work to do.
What inspires your style?
I must say that everybody can buy fashion but, style you have to own. Fashion is in the clothe, style is in the wearer. Fashion fits, but style is internal. I don’t think i have any inspiration what so ever. I am inspired by my self, i look at what i want to wear, and i wear it. I don’t give a hoot. I have carried the craziest hairstyles ever, i have done everything, and am wondering what to do next. I inspire my self. I create my own principles, i follow my own philosophies, and i don’t give a rat's ass what the person next door thinks. If you don’t like my looks, go and jump into the third main-land bridge.
Is there anything you are presently working on?
Yes a whole lot definitely. I am presently working on a book. I have twenty[20] working titles. It is a book that would chronicle my progress, and disappointment walking up the ladder. I have been through a lot. I think i have seen what some people haven’t seen half of yet. I have basically seen it all. So that’s what i am presently working on.
We barely see you with any lady, and that gets me worrying if you are in a relationship. And the last time we met, you said you would be married in 5years time, but that’s yet to happen. Why?
Sincerely, marriage would come when it would come. Back then, when i was 25, when people ask me when i was going to get married, i use to tell them, i would when i am 30.now am over 30,. So i would keep saying when i am over 35 maybe, but definitely before 40. And ofcourse i want to have kids because i love kids. I have a feeling that one of my younger sisters would get married before me, Which is not a bad idea. We would plan the wedding together. I would make it like my own. They say i am hardly seen with the female folks. I am surprised to hear that because, i have a lot of female folks. That aside. I am single, searching, ready to mingle, not married, and we are still looking. It is quite hard for people like us to find people who will love us for who we are, and it is also difficult for people not to take people like us for granted. Or change us from who we are, to what the society expects us to be. But the bottom line is that we would find the right person, and the right person will come.
What achievement is your job yet to bring you?
It has brought me a lot. Fame, and all. But i want more. More international recognition, more international celebration. I feel like i haven’t achieved anything yet. The day i would sit in my house, and people will be bringing vans of money to me Then i would know i have achieved my desires.
